7 most peaceful islands in Croatia where cars are banned

Trips & adventures

Experience a vacation on these stunning Mediterranean islands where everyone is welcome — except cars.

Croatia’s coast is known for having more than a thousand islands, each one more beautiful than the other. If you’re wondering which are the best for a romantic island getaway far away from the hustle and bustle of modern city life, take a look at our list of islands where cars are forbidden.

Susak

Susak is a green jewel of the northern Adriatic fringed with beautiful sandy shores. This paradise destination has no roads, so even if you had a car, there would be nowhere to drive it! If you decide to visit, make sure to see the traditional costume of Susak, a colourful knee-length attire (the shortest of all national costumes in Europe), while enjoying the rich scent of oregano that grows on the island.

Silba

The second most forested island on our coast is very close to Camping Village Šimuni, making it a great option for a one day trip. It can only be reached by ferry or catamaran, but under one condition you have to leave your car at home. Once you arrive, expect a huge forest, charming stone houses and lavender-filled gardens!

And as if the romantic scenery isn’t enough, Silba also proves its reputation as one of the top romantic vacation destinations with Toreta, the famous symbol of the island. This tower with a gorgeous spiral staircase was built by captain Petar Marinić in honour of the sad love story with the woman he was once engaged to.

Prvić

This charming island is located just off the coast of Šibenik and near Goli otok, which makes it perfect for a short day trip. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to leave Prvić so easily, especially after taking a swim in the crystal blue sea. After lounging on the beach, take a walk on the paths that connect the two villages on the island, Luka and Šepurine, which are so close that there is no need for any means of transport except your own two feet.

Zlarin

Zlarin is another stunning destination in the Šibenik archipelago with striking, intact nature. The red corals that grow in the depths of the surrounding waters are a significant part of the island’s history, with many legends and stories revolving around it. You can see and buy the coral jewellery in the two island shops that still sell the traditional souvenir and, of course, gift it to your loved one.

Lopud

Lopud is just a 1-hour boat ride away from Dubrovnik, but it feels like another world. There are no cars or roads on the sunny islet, just lush vegetation and one of the most beautiful beaches on the Croatian coast called Šunj.

Unije

If you’re going on a trip to the island of Cres or Lošinj, make sure to stop by Unije. It currently has less than a hundred inhabitants, which makes it an ideal place for a romantic holiday with your lover. The aroma of herbs in the air, the calming waves, rich olive groves and flock of birds that stop by Unije on migratory trips are just some of the charming things about the island.

Kornati

There is only one type of vehicle allowed in the Kornati National Park boats! The island group is known as a “nautical paradise” with 89 uninhabited islands, islets and reefs. The unique, moonlike beauty of the barren territory and high cliffs is perfect for a couples visit, especially if you want to feel like you and your partner are the only two people in the world.

Now that you know where to go, get ready for a trip to the coast of Croatia and recharge your batteries in the peace and quiet of these charming destinations.
