Explore karst nature, dozens of waterfalls and old mills hidden in the heart of Croatia.

Mrežnica river is situated in the very heart of Croatia. Flowing from the charming town of Slunj to Korana river, one of the four rivers of Karlovac, the river unpredictably tangles over and under the ground — as many karst rivers do. Because of its striking nature, many call Mrežnica the pearl of natural karst, as well as one of the most beautiful karst rivers in Europe.

The secret of its appeal is travertine, a phenomenon characteristic for some of the most beautiful bodies of water in Croatia, such as the Plitvice Lakes. This light, porous material forms barriers with stunning waterfalls, and 93 of those can be found in Mrežnica. Travertine is made from dissolved calcium of limestone rocks, which also purify the water, making Mrežnica one of the clearest rivers in this part of Europe.

Old mills and stone cities

The river allures not only with its beauty, but also its history. Mrežnica’s coast is a place of rich architectural heritage, with old mills taking the spotlight. Today, there are about thirty left — some of them are updated to hydropower plants, some are converted to restaurants serving local specialities, but most are renovated as vacation homes.

Mrežnica’s coast is also jewelled with the remains of stone cities, built in the ancient times by the Romans, Illyrians and first Croats.

Adrenaline lovers, rejoice!

Staying in a renovated mill has its charms, but the river also provides pleasure for adventure lovers. Rafting or kayaking on Mrežnica is a memorable experience due to dozens of waterfalls, with the biggest ones being Milković and Šušnjar. One is 8,5, and other 15 metres high, graciously falling in two cascades. The river is also suited for family trips and those wanting a more tranquil experience, given that the crystal clear water is perfect for a refreshing swim and splashing under the waterfalls.

For a Robinson-like experience visit the excursion site Canyon park springs Mrežnica, located 50 kilometres from the Plitvice Lakes, and try out camping in its untouched nature. This part of Mrežnica extends into a lake with an island in the middle, forming a unique canyon aquarium. Although it attracts many tourists, the site preserves perfect harmony between man and nature.
