Never arrive at the campground at night

As with all camping, this is one of the most important things to know. First time camping in an RV can be a fantastic experience, but it can also be ruined if you have to park in the dark.

Choose the right size RV

Explore your options and think about what you need. Are you going with your partner alone or is it a family trip? How big a fridge do you need? If you choose a trailer, how much can your car tow? These are all key questions for good preparation.

Think small

How much space do you really need? A smaller, simpler RV is much easier to set up, and it’s a much less waste of money, space, and gas. Also, try not to bring too much stuff, especially when it comes to clothes.

Buy good tires

It is really important to not skip this one. Even if you have bought a new RV, the tires may not be very good. It depends on how long your journey is going to be, of course, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Avoid accidents with black water

It isn’t as bad as it sounds, but make sure you know what you are doing when emptying your black water tank. Check the RV manual, watch a video, ask a friend – just make sure to have the dump valves closed before removing the cap and connecting the sewer hose.

Prepare a camping packing list

There are some camper accessories you should always pack, and these include: 

  • foldable chairs
  • sufficient cookware
  • sharp kitchen knife
  • rope
  • tarps
  • duct tape
  • enough sheets, pillows and towels
  • playing cards, games, toys…

Other RV supplies include a portable generator, levelling blocks for placing under the tyres, a toolbox and RV toilet paper – yes, it’s a thing. Find a store that sells RV essentials and see if you might need some gadgets or other useful equipment.
